Go Bananas For Fairtrade

8 Mar 2009 15:00:14

Did you know that Bananas contain tryptophan and vitamin B6, which make you feel happy? Hmm neither did I. I didn't know that we spend £10 billion a year on this funny fruit making it the most popular fruit in the world. It makes sense why the Fairtrade Foundation campaign strongly for banana worker rights. Most banana plantation workers barely earn enough to support their families with some earning less than £1 per day. Banana diseases are also a big problem for growers in poorer countries.

There are things we can do to help the foundations cause. Only buy Fairtrade bananas is the obvious one. And a good opportunity to help spread the word is to be a part of the world's biggest Fairtrade banana-eating record attempt by eating a Fairtrade banana anytime between noon on Friday 6 March and noon on Saturday 7 March.

Visit the website for information on which suppliers stock Fairtrade bananas and download a scrumptious banana recipe. Also, if you have one, there is a online photo album where you (or the kids) can download your favourite banana-inspired picture. So banana rama to it in Fairtrade style or, in the case of these rapping Bananas, banana cool style!

Eco Chic Wedding & Home Show

7 Mar 2009 15:00:45

There's a brand new wedding show in town and it was created especially for all the green blushing brides to be. The first Eco Chic Wedding & Home Show will showcase everything you could possibly need to plan your wedding in an eco-friendly and ethical fashion.

Katie Fewings, director of Ethical Weddings (an online eco wedding magazine) and Kate Haines, founder of GreenFinder (an online green pages directory) are the two eco chics behind the show. Having done the research for their own green weddings they seem to have an eye for knowing where to find all the things an green bride would desire - wedding dresses, rings, photographers, flowers, gifts, honeymoon destinations, venues, cakes - all eco-conscious suppliers.

If you're not getting married anytime soon but you know someone who is and they're not yet hooked into the idea of colouring their wedding green this might just be your ticket to get them interested. One reason - it's held at the stunning grounds of the Birmingham Botanical Gardens and Glasshouse. There will also be home and lifestyle exhibitors displaying their eco-friendly homewards and other eco innovations so everyone has the chance to shop.

If you can't make it to Birmingham you can get some valuable information from green wedding books. GreenGuide for Weddings is a brand new book by Jen Marsden with the foreword by Katie Fewings.

The show will be held on Sunday 8 March from 11am-4pm. Tickets are £8 and are available from the website or by calling 0121 454 1860.

Pink It In October

1 Oct 2008 18:29:23

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month.Breast cancer is the most common cancer. One in nine women is diagnosed with it in their lifetime. That means either you or one of your eight female friends are likely to find a cancerous lump on her breast. Thankfully survival rates have improved significantly in the last two decades and this is largely due to a greater awareness of the cancer, more research leading to improved treatments and the introduction of screening programs across Europe.

You can support Breast Cancer Awareness month by either donating funds, participating in a charity ‘friendship' walk or organising your own event to help raise money for research. For a fundraising pack visit Breast Cancer Campaign website. Also Breast Cancer Care, an organisation that helps patients and their loved ones deal with breast cancer has an official In the Pink day on Friday 24th of October.

To think that every eleven minutes someone is diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK, wearing a bit of pink for the day to raise a couple of quid for a good cause isn't really a huge effort.
