Fight Hair Loss with Neem Oil

6 Oct 2009 16:00:13

Hair thinning and hair loss affects a lot of men. What may be surprising is the amount of women who lose their hair. It's believed that up to 13% of women lose some amount of hair in their lifestime - pre and post menopause being the most common time to lose it. Some research has shown that 75% of women over the age of 65 will be affected.

Beware of the myths that circulate around the reasons for hair loss (like dying, washing or combing your hair too often). Hair thinning or loss in women is different to a receding hairline or bald spot in men. One cause can be the condition called androgenetic alopecia which is a general thinning of hair, another is alopecia areata. This second condition is an autoimmune disease that affects about 2% of people (So Organic's founder Sam once had it though is ‘absolutely fine now!'). Attacked by white blood cells the hair follicles shrink and hair production slows. It's not as bad as it sounds and there are treatments (as Sam's healthy head of long brown locks is testament to).

Azadiracta Indica commonly known as Neem is a tree in the mahogany family. It's place in the treatment of hair loss comes when it's leaves are extracted from neem leaves. Neem oil can encourage new hair growth as well as help combat premature graying. Applying direct to the scalp or in the form of a shampoo are the most common ways to use the oil. For an intensive treatment leave the oil in hair all night. Neem is also great at relieving dry and itch scalps, dandruff and scalp psoriasis. An added bonus is it leaves hair silky and strong. Dr.Hauschka make both a Neem Hair Oil and Neem Hair Lotion.

Neem won't necessarily ‘cure' hair loss but it will help slow the process, encourage some new growth and keep the overall health of the hair in good condition.

The John Masters range of products has long been a leader in the organic hair care market. Though a little biased (only because I adore using his products) I think the New York hairdresser has hit the nail on the eco organic head when it comes to his hair care range; they work like no other organic or non organic products this beauty blogger's tried.

But, with the launch of the John Masters Skin Care Range, the question is: can he do it, naturally, for skin also?

The team at John Masters have sourced some interesting organic ingredients (like linen, radish root and rye extract), used innovative ideas (a toner for face and hair) and drawn inspirations from all over the world to create this new line.

The range is characterised by subtle natural fragrances and organic formulations with active ingredients to make these product a luxury for the skin but also truly work effectively. The line is one of the first to use two innovative natural preservatives: radish root extract and aspen bark extract. These act as all-natural anti-microbials to help these products stay effective for longer (an issue for many chemical-free brands).

Many products in the line possess the USDA logo (the US organic certification body like the Soil Association), and all the ingredients are either organic or approved by EcoCert (the EU body that examines the environmental-friendly attributes of raw materials).

So does John Masters expertise in organics transfer from hair care to skin care? You betcha - superior quality matched only by some of the other premium organic brands in the industry and his own hair care range.

The new range includes:

Rose Foaming Face Wash
Rose & Aloe Hydrating Toning Mist
Rose & Apricot Antioxidant Day Creme
Firming Eye Gel
Jojoba and Ginseng Exfoliating Clean
Lavender Hydrating Mist for Skin and Hair
Green Tree and Rose Hydrating Skin Serum
Pomegranate Facial Nourishing Oil
Linden Blossom Face Crème Cleanser
SPF 30 Natural Mineral Sunscreen
Vitamin C Anti-Aging Face Serum
Moroccan Clay Purifying Mask
Mandarin Maxim Moisture
Calendula Hydrating & Toning Mask

Organic skin care and toiletries brand Raw Organic is relaunching with a new name and expanding its product range. The development of the Rawganic name follows research by manufacturer Marshall Curtis with customers who say it is easier to pronounce and remember.

Marshall Curtis managing director, Stephen Ley, said: "We've made it easier to pronounce. Customers were already abbreviating the name to Rawganic, so we've streamlined the name but lost none of the core, essential values of our products which are proving so popular with customers who care about what they put on their skin."

First to market under the Rawganic brand will be the company's new organic cotton facial wipes. Designed to make cleansing, toning and moisturising easy and simple, the facial wipes are tough enough to tackle everyday make-up and feature the soothing properties of aloe vera and green tea.

Dermatologically tested and manufactured in the UK using biodegradable organic cotton from sustainable sources, they are colour and fragrance free and contain no chemical nasties. The range is also non-GM and has not been tested on animals.

The facial wipes will cost £3.50 for 25 wipes. They offer excellent value for money and, like all products in the Rawganic range, are approved by both the Soil Association and the Vegetarian Society. They will be available from So Organic in the coming month. If you'd like to reserve some of the luxury new facial wipes, sign up here and we'll contact you when they arrive!

Over the next few months, the Rawganic name and logo will gradually replace Raw Organic on packaging for the full product range, including the award-winning wild chamomile and olive hand and body lotion, bilberry and juniper conditioning shampoo, and apple and elderflower refreshing body wash.

The first thing you notice about this product is its colour - it's just about as bright orange as you can get. My reaction to the solar bright colour wasn't great - so used to applying white or clear creams to my skin, the intense colour of this face oil felt unusual at first. But try not to be put off by the orange or you will miss out on a superb skin boost.

Superfruit Concentrate by Essential Care is a rich vegan face oil made with a blend of organic supernutrients. It has the anti-oxidant, super nourishing fruit oils of the pomegranate, rosehip, sea buckthorn and avocado. These help to protect the face from UV and free-radical damage as well as promote skin elasticity and collagen synthesis.

Other things you should know about this super little number. It comes in a neat 30ml pump tube. It is certified 100% organic by the Soil Association. You can apply it just about any which way you like - over a daily moisturiser, as a night time treatment or a weekly skin boost - but the one thing you must take care with is to only apply a small amount. That's 1 to 2 drops only. If you apply to much, be warned now, you run the risk of turning into a carrot. Well, not exactly, but the vibrant vitamins and nutrients in this product can alter skin tone if you use excessively.

I applied 2 and half drops (just to push the barrier a little) to my face after I'd cleansed in the evening and didn't apply a moisturiser before or after. You'd be happy to know I didn't turn bright orange. After a grey week of sniffles and energy zapping computer time my skin came back to life and actually had some colour in it - not the fake tan kind, instead the healthy glow kind. It absorbed really well and although an oil, it didn't make my face feel oily, but rather soft - perhaps because so little was applied.

If you've tried the Essential Care's Superfruit Concentrate let us know what you think and we will share them with our other organic-ite readers.
