Get Ready for Organic Fortnight!

17 Jul 2009 16:00:03

The Soil Association's idea of a good week is to pack as many organic goodies and fun as possible into seven days. But that's near right impossible in this booming industry so I guess they thought it's best to make a fortnight - keep us full to the brim with wholesome delights for a little longer.

Organic Fortnight is THE time for people who are passionate about all the great things organic has to offer show their love through hosting events and generally raising awareness about why it's the best choice for our planet, our animals and our own health. Shops, schools, cafes, farms - you name it the passionate organic-ites will be involved in some way shape or form.

So it is a little way off yet but now's our chance to get organised and get involved. The Soil Association has some great ideas about how you and I can create our own buzz around organic to encourage others - hosting an organic crunch dinner for example. But if you fancy encouraging more than just your close circle of friends and family to reach a wider audience the Soil Association can help you out there too. They have a good guide on how to attract local media to cover your event and thereby attract potential organic-ites to come along. Click here for a copy.

The more of us that share our organic ideals the more impact Organic Fortnight will have in helping others to realise the benefits of this great movement.

Organic Fortnight will run from the 8th to the 20th of September this year. For more info on how to get involved click here.

Big Green FlagIt's going to take just about every single one of us to cool the planet and we're going to get a whole lot more done if we work together to come up with the most eco savvy solutions. Cooperation, shared know-how and a whole lot of teamwork. And that's the idea behind Team Green Britain day this 10th of July. Whether you're an eco warrior or an eco newby you can do your bit to help fight climate change; this really is a case of every little bit matters.
At the present there are five teams on the site (but more are expected to be created). You can join:

Team Energy to follow tips on cutting energy usage (and bills) in your home. Tips include getting together with friends to share the telly, insulating and boiling the kettle one cup at a time.

Team Swap to, you guessed it, swap your old stuff for new. Tips include choose quality over quantity and keeping jewellery for special occasions as producing it is quite energy intensive.

Team Big Lunch to bring communities together to share food, tales and good times. Tips include growing your own food or buying locally to reduce your food miles and slowing down to enjoy it.

Team A to B to make journeys as green as possible. Tips include ride sharing, sharing shopping trips and holidaying closer to home.

EcoTeam to help you set green goals and support each other to achieve them. A trained team leader shows you how to measure how your actions to see how they have benefited the environment and your money purse.

For those that are only half sold on the concept this might be the clincher on getting you involved. If you join Team Britain you will have exclusive access to London 2012 tickets and special Olympic events.

The site also has a green reads section where you'll find 60 second guides including greening the school run, counting your food miles, farmers markets, transport emissions and giving your bathroom an eco make over (our tip on this one: natural candles instead of parrafin and chemical based candles are a simple and instant way to change the feel of your bathroom at night).

To join visit Team Green Britain.

Miss Earth UK 2009 Pageant

21 Jun 2009 16:00:18

Beauty queens have always advocated ‘world peace' in the hope their words alone would wipe out global poverty, environmental catastrophe and hatred. But these words have likely been somewhat lost on the young wannabe princesses who aspire for Baywatch-style bikini bods. Well perhaps, and I do say perhaps lightly, the Miss Earth Beauty Pageant can refocus beauty ideals across the lands to highlight the necessity for clean beaches rather than bleach clean teeth. Perhaps.

Any ‘green, glam and gorgeous' ladies out there who would like to represent the UK in this years 2009 Miss Earth pageant visit the website to register. Four country winners will be chosen. Judges will be looking for beauties who are ‘informed, goal-oriented and committed to playing a part in preserving and protecting the environment for future generations'.

The crowning ceremony for Miss Earth UK 2009 will be on Saturday 22 August. Judges for Miss Earth UK include the Sugababes, designer, Scott Henshall; Club4climate founder, Dr Earth; supermodel, Hofit Golan and Friday Night Project presenter, Aisleyne.

Any event that brings attention to keeping our natural world safe and anyone who wishes to promote mother earth is well worth a look in we think - especially if they go organic!

One of the UK's most botanically (and environmentally) green places to visit is the magical plant land of the Eden Project nestled in the south-west countryside of Cornwall. If you're looking for a natural, interesting and fun place to take the kids this summer what a better place to start than paradise?

Everyday from June 1 to July 17 the Eden Project has a range of activities. Every weekday there's Storytime (magical tales for young and old told by the Pollination team), Tea and Talk (a chance to meet the Green Team for those gardening tips your plants have been dying for you to ask), and Picnic time (al fresco style teddy bear picnic).

On Sunday July 19 the Eden Project will bring to life their ambitious idea - The Big Lunch - a bring-your-own, open-air party for 61 million people. They're encouraging everyone to come out to their streets and into their neighbourhoods. The idea is to get as many people as possible outdoors and involved with the local community. Pavement art, playing music, gardening, painting the fence... eating lunch - whatever it is as long as it's in the big wide world and is carried out with an up-for-it attitude.

The Eden project's mission for The Big Lunch is to ‘to demonstrate aspects of behaviour and thinking that encourage us all to explore the boundaries of what is presently called Sustainable Living.'

Other up and coming happening at the Eden Project are Wild Food Monthly talk, Evolution of a Cornish Clay Pit, performance and workshops by Tibetan Monks, concerts by Paul Weller, Oasis and the Kooks, and the Eden Project Marathon. For more details visit the Eden Project website.
